Journey Through Time
For four weeks I am Going to be doing the summer learning journey about the history of New Zealand. This is the second week of my journey and the fifth day.
Activity one
For this activity we have to research a cathedral in New Zealand and on our blog put a picture of the cathedral and under it we have to put the name, location and when it was built.
The name of this cathedral is St Mary's Cathedral located in wellington and was opened in 1851 but was destroyed by a fire in 1898.
Activity two
For this activity we have to write down what we think about the fact that women in Saudi Arabia weren't allowed to vote until 2015. Is it fair why or why not?
I think it is just stupid ,i just do not get it if men have the right then why not women it is completely not fair because women should be able to vote for what they think as well as men.
Bonus Activity
For this activity we have to read an Anzac poem and we have to write down how if makes us feel?,what you think of it? and do you like it or not?
As soon as I started to read the poem it struck me with sadness but also grateful that they sacrificed their lives for our freedom.I think this poem is so touching and sad but it is a beautiful poem.

Hey Lucy,
ReplyDeleteIt’s Jade C from Summer Learning Journey team. It’s amazing to see that you have been blogging and completing the SLJ activities over the weekend! You are an excellent blogger, keep up the great work!
Wow this cathedral looks devine. I love antique buildings that were built many years ago. Do you think that photo was taken in 1851? I don’t think that’s a photograph of St.Mary’s cathedral as it had been burnt and destroyed in 1898. Coloured photos had been invented in the early-mid 1900s. :) It’s so sad to read that the cathedral has been destroyed by the fire, I hope that there wouldn’t be any more accidents like that in NZ, so that we wouldn’t have any more beautiful buildings destroyed.
I totally understand how you feel, it’s very unfair and I also think that women should get equal chance and opportunities. Back in the olden days, it was very common for men and women to think that women are inferior to men so women had to work at home and were given limited freedom compared to men. Only men were allowed to make important decisions and suggestions. Nowadays, we are living in the world where freedom and equally are considered important and crucial. A lot of countries have amended and created new laws to give more freedom and choice for women.
Yes, the poem ‘In Flanders Field’ is a beautiful but sad poem. It was written to remember all the soldiers who lost their lives in the war. We should not fortget the people who sacrifised their lives for our country. We will always remember.
All the best,
Jade C.
Kia Ora Lucy,
ReplyDeleteI’m Dani, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team. I normally comment on blogs in the Kaikohekohe cluster ( Northland) but I have been lucky enough to get the chance to visit some blogs in the Uru Manuka cluster!
It is great to see that you have been very active over the last few days. Keep up the awesome effort!!
It’s such a shame that people spent so many years building the cathedral, only to have it burn down a few decades later. That’s actually a photo of St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney, Australia. It’s a very beautiful cathedral. Construction of the cathedral finished in 1851 as well! Unfortunately it was ruined by fire in 1865, luckily a replacement was eventually built. It still stands today ( as you can see by the photo of it!). Whereas St Mary’s in Wellington was never rebuilt.
I think you have a valid point. It is not fair that men got to vote and women did not. Both genders should have the right to vote. We are very lucky in New Zealand that Kate Sheppard led the Women’s Suffrage movement, making New Zealand the first in the world to let women vote. The next step for gender equality in New Zealand is equal pay. Do you know much about the gender pay gap?
It is a very sad poem. We are very lucky to be in New Zealand where brave men went and fought so that we could stay safe. They made the ultimate sacrifice for us and we are forever grateful for that. This is why, every ANZAC day we spend time remembering those who served and died in all the peacekeeping operations/ conflicts and wars. Have you been to an ANZAC day
service before?
I look forward to reading more of your blogs soon!
-Dani
