Activity 3
For this activity we have to imagine that New Zealand is going to sink underwater Next week and we have to write about what it was like living in New Zealand 2018.
What it Is like living in New Zealand.
New Zealand is placed the third most beautiful country in the world. I am so lucky to live in new zealand it is only an half an hour drive to get to a beach and on that note new zealand has the most beautiful beaches ones with crystal clear water and pale yellow sand. Here in New Zealand on of the most beautiful thing is the Native bush Its lush green and filled with ferns and hanging vines and Native Trees. New Zealand has lots of cities but the main ones are Auckland which has lots of beautiful volcanoes and beaches. Wellington which is the capital of New Zealand and it has one biggest museum in New Zealand called Te Papa where it has a lot of amazing things like the colossal squid. Christchurch is a cool place with amazing people and loads of fun activities to do there.
Along with everything else there are some amazing natural structures that are very pretty one of them being the Limestone Arches. these arches have a big red river running through these big long limestone arches. Altogether New Zealand is such a cool and Beautiful place to live.
I am a student at in Uru Mānuka. In 2020 I was a year 9 and in 2021 I will be a year 10. This is a place where I will be able to share my learning with you. Please note....some work won't be edited - just my first drafts, so there may be some surface errors. I would love your feedback, comments, thoughts and ideas.

Day 5 Blink and you'll miss it Activity 2 SLJ
Activity 2
For this activity we have to imagine that our teacher decides to take us on a trip to tundra. Then we have to pretend that you are writing a letter to a friend or family member telling them about your experience.
Dear Mum & Dad
Going to tundra was so cool , the grass / shrubs there looked so different and it was freezing. I remember taking my first step outside and the cold hitting me like a thousand knives on my bare skin. That was when they notified me that the temperature was around -27 degrees C i rushed back to but a jacket on then went out to join the others
Me and my group ventured out cross country , the dry grass crunched under your feet when you walked , kinda like when the grass is frozen in the morning. Walking through the dry lands and tiny little streams if you could even call them that the were more like a leak in a swimming pool when it all flows out and it flows to the side.We walked for 10 - 15 minutes then we came to a few small pointy hills when we walked around it everything was covered in a light coat of snow but when you turned around everything was dry and had small pools of reddish water , but then turn around and its hills and snow and ice, it was just weird.
After we played in the snow and continued walking for a bit it was time to go back when we got back no one was there so we headed in a different direction. We then came to a big lake so big you couldn't see the other side but mostly because it was blocked by big icebergs. The water in the lake was covered in small patches of extremely thin ice as thin as paper .We stood there just gazing out at the lake before we were interrupted by a call telling us to come back because they were ready to leave.
That was our adventure and i hope to go again because it was so pretty / Actually go there

Day 5 Blink and you'll miss it Activity 1 SLJ
Activity 1
For this activity we have to say if we think logging should be allowed in New Zealand and have at least two reasons to support your statement.
I think that we should not allow logging here in new zealand. One reason is that it is killing our environment and we shouldn't be cutting down all of our forests. Another reason is because we would be destroying animals habitats and then slowly some Native animals will die because of habitat loss.

For this activity we have to imagine that we are interviewing Sir Edmund Hillary. We then have to write five questions that we would ask him.
1.Why did you want to start climbing mountains?
2. What was the first mountain that you climbed?
3.When did you start to climb mountains?
4.How old were you when you first wanted to be a mountain climber?
5.How did you feel when you reached the top of Mt Everest?

For this activity we have to create a beast then describe it on our blog. For this activity i wrote it as a story and called it The Lone Walker
The Lone Walker
No one knows its name only the cries of terror that come from its prey. It has a thick coat of Stiff fur in the color of midnight black. It only comes out at night and prawls in the shadows of the trees. It has a long Slick, thick tail sweeping behind its slim body. it has eyes like the galaxy purple grey and black with hundreds of white specks. It has long pointy tusk like Teeth like a walrus hanging from its mouth like fangs. It has pointy ears that move in the direction of every sound waiting and waiting. Its feet are dark fluffy grey but not siff like the rest it was like silk. it had a paw like foot with huge hawk like claws that were a dark brown like a piece of chocolate you would have eaten hundreds of years ago. This creature is only feared by one thing .......US

for this activity we have to write on our blog whether we would or would not like go to see
Tane Mahuta or some refer it to the "lord of the forest" one day then explain why or why not.
For me i would love to go see Tane Mahuta because so many people have described how big it is and taken photos so i can slightly imagine it but i want to go see it in real life because its always so much bigger that what it is in the photos. I would also like to see it because it such a big beautiful tree.

For this activity we have to think about what we think is special about our hometown and what we love about it.
First there are so many unique things to do here in christchurch one of those things are.
1. A jailhouse hotel were they turned a prison into a hotel and it looks so cool i mean you get to stay inside a old prison
2. Adrenaline forest this one i have done before and it is so much fun and scary it is where you are hooked to a harness with clips attached and you go up to theses fun courses full of flying foxes and ziplines and it gets really high up.
even though these fun things are so cool to do the thing that makes christchurch special is its history and its scenery and beautiful structures.

Science RoadShow
Today the science roadshow came to our school. It started off with Shane and Anna putting on a show in the front of the learning street. They called the show fire and ice they showed us some cool tricks and they talked about temperatures of things we use in our everyday life. One of the tricks was they had a metal stick with a hoop on the end of it. He then gave one of the volunteers a ball and said to drop the ball through the hoop to see if it would fit and it did easily. He then put the stick into a container full of liquid nitrogen. after a little bit he pulled out the stick and asked for the volunteer to do the same thing , drop the ball through the hoop but this time it didn't fit. After he explained the trick and told us that the molecules when they are cold they move closer together. After their show they opened up the classrooms where there was a whole lots of science activities that we could do and find out about what causes it to happen. It was a really fun experience and you learn a lot from it.
Here are some photos of the things we did.

Musical Theatre - Bugsy Malone
For the 2018 passion projects i'm doing musical theatre and this year for musical theatre we are going to be performing Bugsy Malone. If you didn't know Bugsy Malone is based in the 1920 and in the 1920 things were very different from how we live now. For Bugsy Malone My characters are. I think this going to be entertaining and lots of fun to perform.
Lena - Lena is a character who thinks she is the best and its all about her. She ends up knocking blousey out of the way and making it all about her.
Shady - Shady is a character that is working for sam but is also working for dandy dan and plays a part to set up a crucial scene.
So to understand these characters more i'm going to do some research about what it would be like for them in the 1920s .
What was The Fashion like ?
Girls
The fashion back then is different to the now days back then these were the trendy things for them.
Short Flapper style clothes that provided freedom of movement
Striking Art Deco designs
Cloche hats and bobbed hairstyles
The boyish 'garconne' look and adoption of male clothing
Casual styles for day wear as worn by Norma Shearer ( one of the fashion icons ) in the photo
Fun, fringed flapper dresses or glamorous silk gowns for evening attire
Boys
The essential part of a 1920s man’s wardrobe was his suit. For day, evening, office, or parties, a man always wore a suit. The only exceptions were for blue collar workers, sport players or Young men or collage men who dressed more casually. But, even they owned suits and wore them with pride.
What sets 1920s men’s suits apart from other decades are the material and fit. Suits were mostly made of thick wool or a wool tweed, and pants made of wool based flannel that made them heavier than today’s suit materials but lighter than the previous decades. Suit jackets were either single or double breasted and featured 3 or 4 buttons up the front. The top button came to the center of the heart, giving way to notch lapels. The highness of the suit lapels is what really sets 1920s suits apart from suits of other eras. Also the mens suits were bright colors with vibrant patterns.

Homemade Solar Heaters
Aim= Our aim was to plan, create and test a homemade solar panel. Not only that but our aim was also to use our solar heater that we had created to heat up some water and find out the temperature using a thermometer
Method= First we planned a design that we thought could heat water. the teacher then showed us what design we were going to be creating. we then did a paper mache balloon and left it to sit for a few days. we then popped the balloon and cut the paper sphere in half. we then wrapped the inside of the half circle in tin foil so that you couldn't see any paper on the inside. we then filled up a beaker with water and put it in the inside then left it out in the sun to heat up. we then measured the water to find the results.
Results= In the end the air temperature was 24 degrees and we heated up the water to 37 degrees which is a 13 degrees difference so i would say it worked.

Making Fizzy Drink
Aim=Our aim was to make a fizzy drink.
Ingredients & Equipment=Cup,spoon,citric/tartaric acid,baking soda,Raro/ flavoring ,Water.
Method=First off we took a spoon and cup and started to pour in our citric acid, baking soda, Raro and then filled the cup up with water and then we had our fizzy drink.
Results= When we added the water it bubbled over the top and it was exploding little drips of water everywhere.when we tasted it it had a slight taste of orange raro but then it slowly turned into a citric taste kind of like fizzy lollies without flavor. what was worse was the after taste it lingered in your mouth for ages and it tasted SO bad.But it all depended on how much baking and citric acid i actually put in it.
Conclusion= It tasted bad because the baking soda and the citric acid over powered the flavoring and the baking soda made it salty, bitter taste overpowering every other flavor. The baking soda and the citric acid created carbon dioxide in the water making it grow / make bubbles. The citric acid was an acid and the baking soda is a base and that means that the base plus the acid = CO2

Enzymes
For science today Me and Ella were learning about Enzymes by doing an experiment including jelly.
Aim= What are Enzymes and what they do to the jelly
Ingredients & Materials= Small tray X2 ,Mashed and skinless kiwi fruit , jelly w/ boiling water.
Method= first we cut all the skin off of the kiwi fruit. Second we took the kiwi fruit and mashed it up. Next we spread the mashed kiwi fruit on the tray evenly. After that we poured the jelly into one of the trays that does not have kiwi fruit in and poured jelly in the one that did have kiwi fruit in.
What is a enzyme?= A enzyme is a substance produced by a living organism Which acts as a catalyst to bring out specific biochemical reaction . in other words Enzymes can build or brake down other molecules. The molecules they act on are called substrates. Enzymes are catalysts - Chemicals that hasten a chemical reaction without undergoing any change themselves. Most enzymes are huge protein molecules.

Chromatography With Skittles And Felt Pen
Last Tuesday we did an experiment around chromatography and the experiment that we did was using colors and put it in liquids and then see what happens to the colors.
Felt Pens
Aim=Our aim was to see on the filter paper what the liquid would do to the colors and what colors made the color that we were using.
Materials & ingredients= Type of liquid, Filter Paper,Felt pens,Beaker
Method = First off we took a colored felt pen then put a dot on the bottom of the filtered paper that we had cut out into rectangles. We then poured our liquid into a beaker and dipped the filter paper with the dot on in. When you put the filter paper in the liquid you want to make sure that the colored dot didn't touch the water because then it wouldn't work. After we put the filer paper in the water we held it there for a couple of minuets and then we watched what happened.
Result= in the end the liquid rose through the filter paper and stretched the color out revealing different colors and it looked really cool.
Skittles
Aim= Our aim was to see what happened to the skittles when we let them soak in the water.
Materials & Ingredients= Circular Tray (with lid ),Water,Skittles
Method= First we placed the skittles in the tray evenly spaced then carefully poured the water in. then put on the lid and watch what happens.
Result= In the end the tray looked like a color wheel because the color soaked into the water but stayed in their own section so the colors didn't mix. since all the colors disintegrated into the water it left the skittles white and colorless.

You can see the skittles starting to lose color round the edges
Red Cabbage Indercator
Red Cabbage Indicator
Aim = This Science lesson we were trying to use Red cabbage as a PH indicator
PH levels = The PH levels show in colors to see which house hold items are most acidic.here is a table of the colors of PH levels.
Materials & Ingredients = Red Cabbage , Knife , Boiling Water ,Filter Paper , One large glass beaker , Baking Soda , Washing Soda , Lemon Juice , Vinegar ,Cream of tartar , Antacids , Seltzer Water , Muriatic Acid and Lye ,
House Hold Items To Test.
Method = First we set up our Bunsen burner the put the cabbage in the beaker and boiled it into a liquid, Then we filtered the liquid and poured it evenly into test tubes.
Next we started to add in our house hold items into the liquid in the test tubes then all of a sudden the started to change colors.
Hypothesis = In simpler worlds the cabbage changed the color of other liquids because of the acids in the other liquids so the most acidic color would be Yellowish greenish at the PH level of 12 . And the least acidic color would be red with the PH level of 2 .
Results = In the end these were the house hold items= Sodiumhydrox , Toothpaste , Toilet Cleaner , Lemonade , floor Cleaner , Shampoo.

The Strength of roots
For the past week we have been reading the strength of roots by Marisa Maepu and For this book I decided to create a stop motion of what the story was about but here is a small explanation of what happens in the story.
A boy was walking around in the forest in Samoa when the ground began to shake but after that he started to head back home but before he could he got knocked over by a tsunami and as he was in the tsunami he managed to hold onto a big tree. After that he woke up jammed between branches of a big tree and he was at the top. He looked down to see rescuers but couldn’t speak because of the salt water he swallowed. Finally a branch snaps and a rescuer finds him and gets him down and helps him but then he leaves to find his family. Here is the stop motion that I created.
